Rosie welcomes you to Spring!

Challenge KAL, April 2018

This month you have a choice of two designs!  or you can knit both!

 Challenge #1
April 2018 Challenge KAL
 sample in solid blue:

Spring Weaver

note: I'm working on this sample, Spring Weaver done in Christmas colors, Victorian Cream/Red/Green

Supplies:
1 skein cotton yarn – solid or variegated, your choice – I used variegated
1 pr # 6 needles, or your preferred dishcloth needle size
NOTE:
- Don’t knit tightly!  If you are a tight-knitter, relax a bit, to enable you to work the stitch

Abbreviations:
K 2tog = Knit 2 stitches together
 K 1 – B stitch:
For the next stitch on your needle, you will *make one* by inserting the point of right hand needle into back of stitch below the next stitch [going down into previous purl row] on your left needle, and knit it – this gives an increased stitch
Then, knit the next stitch on your needle, as usual.

Note:  You will cast on 33 stitches; 4 stitches will be for the borders; you will be knitting the ‘pattern’ across the remaining 29 stitches
[K 2] = Knit 2 stitches; this will be at beginning and end of each row in pattern for the side borders

Dishcloth Pattern:

Cast on 33 stitches

Knit 3 rows

Begin pattern [odd rows are wrong side, even number rows are right side]

1)   wrong side  [K 2] Purl across 29 st [K 2]

2)    [K 2] *K 2tog, K 2, K 1 – B then knit st above, K 2;

repeat from * to last st, K 1 [K 2]

3)   [K 2] Purl across [K 2]

4)   [K 2] K 3, K 1– B then knit st above, K 2, K 2tog,

*K 2, K 1 – B then knit st above, K 2, K 2tog; repeat from * to end [K 2]

You will continue to repeat these 4 rows for the Dishcloth

You can knit to your desired length; mine was knit to 8 inches, from first row – not including border

Knit 3 rows for top border

Bind off

Spring Weaver was designed by Linda C Schmidt, c. 2018
I wanted to show off the lovely colors of variegated yarns, but also keep a pattern stitch design that didn’t get lost within all the colors.  Spring Weaver was named for the ‘weave’ of this stitch and watching our spring birds preparing their nests in my backyard.

Challenge #2:  Tweet Tweet

April 2018 Challenge KAL
Tweet Tweet

Working on this sample, Tweet Tweet, in solid aqua color:

Supplies:
1 skein cotton yarn – solid or variegated
1 pr #6 needles, or your preferred dishcloth needle size

NOTE:
Don’t knit tightly! If you are a tight-knitter, relax a bit, to enable you to work this type of stitch

Abbreviations:

K 1 = Knit 1 stitch

Sl 1 = Slip 1 stitch

PSSO = pass slipped stitch over stitch just knit

Psso – K  =  Pass slipped stitch over stitch just knit, don’t drop st—instead knit into the back of it, then remove stitches
P 2tog = Purl 2 stitches together, don’t drop st – instead, purl into the 1st st again, slipping both sts off needle together

Dishcloth Pattern

You will cast on 52 stitches, 5 stitches on each side will be the borders, indicated by [K 5]
You will use the pattern over the remaining 42 stitches

Odd-number rows are the right side, therefore you begin the pattern on the right side.

Cast on 52 stitches

Knit 4 rows, as bottom border

Begin pattern:

1)  [right side] [K 5] K 1, *sl 1, K 1, psso but instead of dropping slipped st from left-hand

needle, knit into the back of it.

 Repeat from * to last st, K 1 [K 5]

2) [K 5] *P 2tog, then purl first stitch again, slipping both sts off needle together;

repeat from * to end [K 5]

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern;

Knit til desired length, my sample was 8 inches, not counting top/bottom borders

Knit 4 rows for top border

Bind off

This pattern uses a horizontal-type herringbone stitch, which reminds me of the songbirds’ beak, so this cloth is simply called ‘Tweet Tweet’
Design by Linda C Schmidt, c. 2018
